Client Background

Bells Fish and Chips is a multi-award-winning restaurant and takeaway chain with four sites around the Durham area. We were approached through our connection with Ecologic and asked to provide quotes for three of the restaurants to supply and install PV systems. These systems would help ease the burden of energy costs on the business and bolster its sustainable credibility.

The Challenge

After surveying the three roof sites, which presented a variety of challenges, including pitched and flat roofs with awkward shapes and angles, the client accepted our proposals. The location in Seaham was a particular challenge, having to manage the array of all the different pitches and orientations involved whilst maximising the potential output from the system to match the client’s needs.

What UCS Renewables Did

For all three sites, we used DMEGC 450W panels in black to fit the business aesthetic with Renusol VarioSole mounting kit for the pitched roofs and Van de Valk for the flat, all with Solis inverters. Overall, this helped the business achieve a total estimated annual output of 86000 kWh a year with a pay back time of just 5 years and a 25-year combined cost saving of £610,000. This also represents a remarkable saving of 17800 kgCO2e output had the energy come from the UK grid.

The Outcome

The creative and efficient design, coupled with our engineers' quality workmanship, ensured that Bells received the best installation possible, which is now providing them with substantial monetary savings and helping them reduce their environmental impact, ensuring they can provide sustainable fish and chips for the north east for years to come.

The Carbon Trust estimates that for catering businesses like Bell’s Fish and Chips, energy costs can represent up to 6% of their total expenditure, creating a large potential for savings with a PV system.
