Client Background

UCS Renewables were contracted by McNally & Thompson on behalf of Gateshead Council to install a solar array to help achieve carbon targets for the local area. The installation at the car park was planned to be part of a series of installations to off-set the cities carbon emissions and achieve Net Zero targets by 2050.

The Challenge

Gateshead Multi-Storey Car Park (MSCP) is one of the most unique installations in the North East. From the outset this was an ambitious project from design to mechanical engineering and scale. The aim for this installation was to install the solar array without the support of a standard roof. The generated electricity would also need to partially offset the electricity used by the electric vehicle chargers within the car park. Designers, structural engineers and solar specialists collaborated to come up with a supporting structure that created a unique mounting system that covered the full area of the 300 space car park. The completed installation is fully exposed above and below highlighting the engineering involved from nut and bolt, DC wiring and the energising panel.

What UCS Renewables Did

Our Energy team worked with the provided drawings from McNally & Thompson to compile a suitable design to maximise the use of the available space and optimise solar generation.

The installation was challenging as rising energy bills created a surge for solar installations increasing the strain of the supply chain and therefore reducing availability of required materials.

Over the course of 8 weeks our installation team overcame each hurdle constructing a large scale ‘mechano’ set installing 4618 components to support the panels – ensuring each panel was torque tested to ensure strength and stability.

The Curve, Teesside University

Working on behalf of local firm Castle Building Services, we installed 177 x 250w solar panels to generate clean, renewable energy. The panels were placed in an east-west configuration using a Renusol FS10 East/West mounting system to make use of the limited space available and ensure maximum exposure to the sun. The result is that the solar panels generate green electricity 365 days a year, providing a renewable energy source and allowing Teesside University to meet its sustainability targets.

Pulman Skoda Durham

UCS installed 80 solar panels onto the showroom’s roof. Working with Kingspan, we designed the layout of solar panels so that the array didn’t affect the integrity of the roof. We used drawings supplied by Kingspan and their standing seam brackets in the installation. The result was a roof of commercial solar panels carefully designed and installed to generate solar power for the showroom. The installation looks great and the building runs on solar energy, meaning low running costs for Pulman Skoda’s flagship showroom.
