Client Background

HartlePower are a not for profit organisation working within Hartlepool to prevent or relieve poverty. UCS Renewables have developed a long-standing relationship with HartlePower spanning several years, installing grant funded Solar PV systems across schools and businesses. HartlePower’s profits are distributed back into the local community via clubs, groups, community centres or good causes. They invest heavily in renewable energy to reduce energy bills for their associates and reduce the overall carbon footprint of the town.

The Challenge

Tees Valley Combined Authority announced the SME Energy Efficiency Scheme (SMEES) allowing small or medium sizes businesses within the area to apply for funding to cover the costs of installing energy or carbon reducing equipment such as Solar PV. The scheme included a fully-funded efficiency audit for each applicant which could be reviewed by local installers to propose an appropriate system. We were keen to help HartlePower access the funding – given the nature of their operation. The inclusion of real-time monitoring ensures HartlePower was essential so HartlePower can review their generation and carbon savings to compile energy reports to showcase the benefits of renewable energy and how they’re helping Hartlepool to reach their net-zero targets.  This would also allow them to track energy savings and re-assign funds to other local projects.

What UCS Renewables Did

We completed surveys of the building in addition to reviewing the provided energy efficiency report, to conclude that the roof was suitable for the installation of solar modules.

A proposal was approved for SMEES funding for the installation of a 38kW array on a single flat roof.

Due to an increase in solar uptake as a result of rising energy costs, there was a shortage of materials globally. One of the key criteria for the funding was that the installation was complete by the end of March 2023, our team worked quickly to acquire suitable material within the required timeframe.

The Curve, Teesside University

Working on behalf of local firm Castle Building Services, we installed 177 x 250w solar panels to generate clean, renewable energy. The panels were placed in an east-west configuration using a Renusol FS10 East/West mounting system to make use of the limited space available and ensure maximum exposure to the sun. The result is that the solar panels generate green electricity 365 days a year, providing a renewable energy source and allowing Teesside University to meet its sustainability targets.

Pulman Skoda Durham

UCS installed 80 solar panels onto the showroom’s roof. Working with Kingspan, we designed the layout of solar panels so that the array didn’t affect the integrity of the roof. We used drawings supplied by Kingspan and their standing seam brackets in the installation. The result was a roof of commercial solar panels carefully designed and installed to generate solar power for the showroom. The installation looks great and the building runs on solar energy, meaning low running costs for Pulman Skoda’s flagship showroom.
