Client Background

Lancaster Morecambe College offers part-time and full-time courses to school leavers and adult learners, their curriculum is made up of technical and creative courses to aid their student's progression into employment. Alongside their campus-based courses, the college offers apprenticeships in 30 different sectors. The college is part of the CPC, a framework designed to connect educational establishments to installers of various equipment, in this instance the college had a need for electric vehicle chargers to offer charging sessions to their staff, students and visitors.

The Challenge

Alongside the active charging pedestals, the college requested the installation of an electric vehicle training board to showcase to their electrical students how both single and three-phase chargers are wired. The board needed to show the key elements of an EV installation so that students could view a non-live system and be hands-on with their learning. A visual aide such as a training board would assist their learning in wiring the chargers correctly and learning how to safely install vehicle charging points. The live chargers which would service the college's car park needed to have a back management portal that would allow the units to be monitored remotely. This made Rolec Quantum chargers the preferred charger as they are robust for the installation location and offered a Rolec partnered back office to monitor charging sessions, charger use, payments, and more.

What UCS Renewables Did

Working alongside the college, we were able to design and install a training board to feature a distribution board, generation meter, isolation switches, and two Rolec chargers: one 7kW (single phase) and the second 22kw (three phases).

We installed two dual Rolec Quantum chargers in the college's car park, the chargers featured a QR code on each socket to allow users to scan to install an app. These chargers are now visible to staff, students, and visitors.

The Curve, Teesside University

Working on behalf of local firm Castle Building Services, we installed 177 x 250w solar panels to generate clean, renewable energy. The panels were placed in an east-west configuration using a Renusol FS10 East/West mounting system to make use of the limited space available and ensure maximum exposure to the sun. The result is that the solar panels generate green electricity 365 days a year, providing a renewable energy source and allowing Teesside University to meet its sustainability targets.

Pulman Skoda Durham

UCS installed 80 solar panels onto the showroom’s roof. Working with Kingspan, we designed the layout of solar panels so that the array didn’t affect the integrity of the roof. We used drawings supplied by Kingspan and their standing seam brackets in the installation. The result was a roof of commercial solar panels carefully designed and installed to generate solar power for the showroom. The installation looks great and the building runs on solar energy, meaning low running costs for Pulman Skoda’s flagship showroom.
