In November 2020, the UK Government unveiled their £12 billion 10-point plan to increase low-carbon energy solutions and to increase the number of electric vehicle chargers throughout the country. The plan aims to aid the countries achievement of net-zero targets by 2050 and provide 250,000 jobs within the industry.

The scheme includes the large-scale use of wind, hydrogen and nuclear energy alongside smaller-scale renewable solutions to energy efficiency within the domestic and public sectors, this includes the addition of readily available EV chargers.

One of the key targets that the Government unveiled was the commitment to installing 600,000 heat pumps yearly. This is supported by changes to the Green Homes Grant that opened to applicants in September 2020. Qualifying energy products such as heat pumps, solar thermal devices and biomass boilers can benefit from up to £5,000 towards the cost of installation. Lower-income households have a threshold of up to £10,000. The Green Homes Grant is open until the 31st March 2022.

£1.3 billion pounds of the funding has been allocated to the improvement of the UK’s electric vehicle charging infrastructure. The funding will cover both home and public charging points. To accelerate the switch to greener travel, prime minister Boris Johnson highlighted that the sale of new petrol and diesel vehicles would terminate by the end of 2030.

The plan also features targets to increase natural resources to increase sustainability and reduce the UK’s carbon footprint. The Government has committed to planting 30,000 hectares of trees by 2025. The commissioning of new national parks will help to conserve 30% of England’s countryside by 2030. Additional plans laid out in the Nature Recovery Network layout steps to restore natural woodlands and wildlife to local areas.

The culmination of these goals will reduce the UK’s carbon output by 180 million tonnes, this is compared to taking all of the cars off UK roads for 2 years.

UCS Renewables are dedicated to aiding the Government’s net-zero targets by continuing to help clients throughout the UK reduce their carbon output with bespoke renewable energy solutions. Over the last ten years, we have seen the industry rapidly grow and in more recent years seen the adoption of battery storage to increase energy savings and grid dependence alongside solar PV systems.
